I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, and it will not stop turning wi-fi on. I’ve done everything I can think of in settings to prevent it, but it is forcibly overriding the settings and turning wi-fi on whether I want it to or not. It’s only been doing this the last few weeks. Anyone know why? I’m a total luddite when it comes to technology.

Do you have set to turn on when you reach a certain location?

Nope, I’ve set it to not scan for wi-fi either but it is CONSTANTLY scanning for wi-fi.

This is why I despise Android. I have one for work, and it went and found some old contacts from a previous job from somewhere online without me asking it to.
Unacceptable.
I make the decisions. I am the human. You are a phone. You do as I ask; do not think for yourself. I had to fight with the settings to finally get rid of these contacts as I am do not associate with these people and do not want them assigned to favorites on my phone.
Meanwhile Cortana on my Windows Phone tries to figure out places I go, but always asks for a name before saving it.
I much prefer WP to iOS and Android. YMMV.

Why? Because it’s not an iPhone.

Probably from your Google account. Like Gmail.

Anytime I hear something like a setting being overridden, I think of a battery saving app. Do you have anything like that?

Is it truly random or does it happen on certain occasions. There might be an app which you told to only use WIFI and it is trying to update or something.

Which is worse.

Why would a battery saver app turn on wi-fi though? That seems backwards.
I do have Avast battery saver, but I could delete it. Doesn’t seem to be making a huge difference anyway.

But I don’t have any new apps. This has only been happening recently, too. Maybe there was a system update in that time frame? I’m not sure.

Some apps override what you see in settings or quick settings. Could even be a widget.

There might be some setting deep in the advanced part of WiFi/Mobile data that causes one or the other to turn on if the other is too weak.

Huh. I have one, I’m on it now. I’ve never had that issue.

Can confirm. Bought iPhone 6, want my android back less than a year in.

Nope. My Gmail has the correct contact list.
I think it somehow found my LinkedIn profile, even though I have never connected it to that phone.

Agreed. I daily use both an iPhone (supplied by my employer) and an Android powered Nexus phone. They’re both older, but of similar vintage. The Apple device cost close to two times as much as the Nexus phone yet it’s the iPhone that feels like a (well built) toy. It does things I don’t want, it doesn’t do things I do want it to do, treats me like a child (
I
decide, not Apple) and so on. Ugh. I’m not getting the hype. When my employer lets me I dump the fashion accessory work phone and get something either with Android or with Windows.

I’m with AT&T, connections optimizer seems to be a Verizon thing. It isn’t on my phone.

My Galaxy S5 (lazy) loves to wake itself up in my pocket and do things. I’ll find the wifi off, bluetooth off, and battery saver on just from it being in my pocket while I walked around.

Install a custom rom, that’s the fun of android!
Location uses your wifi to know where you are, maybe that’s why is turning itself on. You can download tasker and use it to turn wifi off every time it gets on or every couple minutes.

WIFI uses less battery than cell data
